Fireworks Blamed For Deadly Blast


More than 100 people were killed in an explosion at a cafe in western Russia yesterday that was possibly caused by fireworks. Officials in the city of Perm ruled out the likelihood of a terrorist attack.

Another 140 people had been injured in the blast and resulting fire, a spokesman from the regional emergency situations ministry said.

The explosion ripped through the cafe while more than 200 people, mostly employees and their families, were partying inside to celebrate its eighth anniversary.

Police suggested the explosion had been caused by the incorrect use of fireworks

Emergency ministry officials said the fireworks that had been used in the cafe were meant to be launched in open space and were forbidden for use in closed areas.
