Biggest One Hit Wonders Of The Decade

Billboard has named Daniel Powter's Bad Day in 2006 hit the biggest one hit wonder of the noughties.

Powter topped the U.S. Billboard charts for 5 weeks in 2006, hitting such Heady heights they even performed on American Idol. The song was a worldwide hit reaching number 7 in the NZ charts, number 3 in Australia and number 2 in the UK.

Down for Powter, they took two years off and has not been Seen in the Billboard Top 100 since.

Coming in second in the list was the Terror Squad's Lean Back, "Which despite giving people in clubs a new dance move did not do much more for the group.

Tattoed pop group (Billboard called them a rock group but we're not so SURE of that label), Crazy Town, hit the top of the charts with Butterfly in March 2001 but in Billboard's countdown they're number 3 They hit Number 2 in NZ and number 1 in Norway, Finland and Germany. Sadly we've not heard anything from them in the charts since.

A surprise Thurs folks on this side of the world might be James Blunt's place at number 6 on the list.

The Brits ear-bleed inducing (sorry editorialising I know) You're Beautiful was as big a hit in the U.S. as it was everywhere else, hitting the top spot in 2006. But Blunt fans in the U.S. did not have big enough numbers and the best he's done in the Billboard charts since 66 is Good reason to move to the States? Maybe.

Martial law in Maguindanao: The genie is out

As the cameras rolled, a young Army lieutenant flagged down a vehicle carrying a known supporter Ampatuan. Are you carrying firearms, they yelled, as his troops searched the car.

We have no guns, said one of the passengers, who introduced himself as a vice mayor of a town in Maguindanao. By the time he had uttered those words, the search had reached the handbag of a woman, probably his wife, Which yielded a small gun.

Peeved that a lowly local executive could Lie To him under the circumstances, the young lieutenant ordered all passengers out of the car and, as the cameras rolled again, the vice mayor gave a dressing down. In crude Filipino, the young officer blustered: "You're supposed to be an Honorable man, but you lied. We have made clear that no guns are allowed. Did you expect us To respect you now with that you've done? "

This was Maguindanao days before the government imposed martial law in the province.

I can guess where this young lieutenant's coming from. He was probably plucked from a Neighboring war-torn province in Mindanao, where local executives flirt with Rebels, insurgents, and Criminals, giving the Army a hard time. I can bet that at such a tender age in the military, he's already been exposed to the wanton corruption and inefficiency of Civilians in government.

I can also bet that 5 years down the road, this lieutenant will continue protesting the Crooked Ways of local politicians and at some point will have to make a choice for himself: to either join them or rebel against them.

It is easy to romanticize martial law, especially when it covers a limited area, as something the government must do Thurs finish off a clan and bring to justice those responsible for the worst crime ever committed against non-combatants in recent history.

It is also easy to forget what-or who-really gets empowered by martial law. It is certainly not the judiciary, or a Cabinet department, or the Barangay executives. As an Army colonel put it in an interview: "It was already 'martial law' in Maguindanao before the government signed the declaration. We've been in control of the province since posted on The Massacre. "

Of course, the Generals will say that's a lie. Over the last few days, joint police-military units have uncovered armories Disguised as warehouses, sleek firearms, ammunitions and thousands of all-government-issued-that could rival the military's. Authorities have been churning out classified information about the documented strength of the Ampatuans' private armies, personnel, firepower, their hideouts.

Are they telling us they did not know?

In recent years, the bulk of police and military resources, logistics, intelligence, combat, have been geared toward key conflict areas in the Muslim provinces, Maguindanao among them. Because intelligence is intense toward the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (Whose base includes Maguindanao), it therefore becomes unthinkable for private warehouses and armories huge (even if underground) to be left undetected by security forces, unless they're playing blind.

And any Army or police officer worth his salt will not deny that since 2001, no Battalion, brigade or division commander or police director in the area got assigned without the blessings from the Patriarch, Gov. suspended. Andal Ampatuan Sr..

One proof of this is the case of an Army colonel, who had managed Thurs Prolong his stay in the area despite charges that they had been pocketing Cafgu funds, among other questionable acts. It took an AFP-wide "cleansing" of the Cafgu Battalions 2 years ago for him to be finally relieved from his juicy position of arming, training, and "disciplining" the Ampatuans' Cafgus. Yet, the AFP dropped any charges against him even after a Thorough probe.

Imagine him watching TV news nowadays from the comforts of his military desk. Imagine all cops and soldiers previously assigned to the province listening now to their superiors who, after each operation, express shock at the "mind-boggling" firepower of the Ampatuans.

Watching all these raids is akin Thurs seeing a pampered wife scorned but finally, after many years of playing deaf and blind confronting the other woman in her Palatial home and confiscating all her jewelry.

It's a Sickening Feeling, made worse by the fact that now deployed in Maguindanao officers are young, idealistic, passionate, patriotic to the core who in due time will find out all about this. And who, because of martial law, will be Made to believe that civilian governance has been an utter failure. And who, because of martial law, will be Made to believe that indeed the military-rule can efficiently and effectively.

This is not some Misplaced, fear unfounded. Just look at how the Gringo Honasans, Danny the LIMS, the Sonny Trillaneses, and the Ariel Querubins began their journey as young men.

They grew up with practically the same combustible elements now raging in Maguindanao. They were once like that young lieutenant saw me on TV last week, confiscating the guns of a corrupt executive, damning his lies, and serving as government when all else failed.

It did not take long for Them to take matters into their own hands and Attempt to Take Over. Read More.http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/views-and-analysis/12/07/09/martial-law-maguindanao-genie-out

My Greatest Failures

Fail The phrase is becoming common place in today's western world, just as STD (or rather STI) has. I found an interesting account of its origin is Read Write Web the other day, but To put it crudely, 'to fail' is to make a "cock-up 'of something, usually quite badly.

The video clip of Nhlanhla Nene falling off his chair during a televised interview is a classic example.

The web is becoming littered with videos and photos of fail moments - which range from the creatively clever laboriously to the lame. There is even a whole website called failblog.org dedicated to these.

Being a slow (and moderately hung-over) Friday morning, I Googled "fail" in Google images and had a little Peruse. These are my top one's that made me laugh out loud for about five hours and threw off everyone's chi at work.Read Morehttp://witnessthis.wordpress.com/2009/01/16/my-greatest-failures/

EXCLUSIVE interview with 'Fringe's Jasika Nicole, Part 1-Astrid and Walter

Recently the J.J. Abrams Examiner had the extreme privilege of a nice long conversation with Fringe's Jasika Nicole. All this week, we'll be bringing you portions of the interview, along with all of the inside information of the future of the show, ratings, episodes, and much, much more. Below is the first portion of our interview.

Sean: First off, I just wanted to tell you, I have really enjoyed this season seeing Astrid come into her own.

Jasika: (Laughs) Yeah, seeing her get out of the lab has been very cool.

Sean: I know that's got to be great for you, too.

Jasika: Yeah, it's also really wonderful Because so many people have been supportive of that, and like, people who kind of have that much invested in the show like, you know, the sound guys and the grips who work on shows all the time and I'm sure they've seen it all. They'll come up to me and say, "Hey you're out of the lab again, that's great!" The get so excited and it's really genuine, so that part makes me feel really good. It does not seem as selfish, you know, it's not just about me wanting to get out of the lab, there are other people that think that it would suit the story well To Have the lab assistant growing a bit in terms of what's happening with the story. So it's been very, very cool.

Sean: Yeah, it has been great. You always have that austere look about you, too. Which just makes seeing you out and about so much better.

Jasika: (Laughs) Wow, that's such a compliment! Thank you very much, that I was austere! (laughs again) I love it.

Sean: My purpose in that is just to let you know that we really enjoyed it. All of the people I know who watch the show as well have really, truly enjoyed it.

Jasika: Ah, that's so fantastic. We were all really hoping that in season 2, because they said that when we got picked up and they talked to the producers on the phone and they said, "we want to ask you to get out of the lab and we want her to be a bigger part of what's going on. " And I thought, ok, they're just saying that to make me feel better. But I was not grieve if they were really going to meet up to the promises that they made, and they absolutely did. I mean, she has some excellent stuff to do. And she actually has a couple more episodes that have not aired yet that are so fantastic.

And I really like that they pair her with Walter. He's Able to get out of the lab now Because he's trying to become more independent, and do stuff for himself and Regain Some of the life they Used to have, and so "Because of that Astrid is getting to go out with him. She's still kind of his babysitter, but now it's just not in the lab. It serves the story so well.

Sean: Yeah, I was actually going to ask you about the relationship that has been developing between you and Walter. Sometimes it seems as though you're taking care of Walter, and at other times it seems like you are more of the loving daughter Thurs him. Is there a way that you view that?

Jasika: Yeah, absolutely, I think that is definitely a correlation that we made together. And initially it started out for me "Because they had such a complicated relationship with his son, the doctor did. They were trying to repair all this damage that had been done, and I thought that it was very telling Astrid that his new lab assistant was the same age as his son. So it was all the stuff that they tried to tell Peter, but Peter did not want to listen to it, they was all over it, he was still hurt from the past, and so Astrid Had to kind of fill that space for him . And it worked really well "Because they were spending all this time together and it was fine. Then I think that their relation ended up surpassing that area, where they just started appreciating her for (who she was), and that was also happening at the same time as his relationship with his son was getting better. Now they have their own separate relationship instead of her just being the person to watch him. She's a person they can talk to about whatever ... They have their own dynamic that is separate from his relationship with Peter.

September 11, 2001 - December 7,1941: Dates That Will Live In Infamy

Today, December 7, marks the anniversary of "a date that will live in Infamy," is the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. This was the event that brought the United States into WW II, ultimately leading to the defeat of what was then a overwhelming threat to the security of the world. Had the Japanese not committed this act, and had not the United States have entered the war, who is to know the state of the world today.
That hypothetical gives way to the actual reality of the day, that of the global threat of terrorism both through "conventional" means, as well as through nuclear weapons that could bring global Devastation in seconds. Let us never forget that those who wish to control and dictate through the belief that all in the world should be a certain way, whether ethnically, religiously or both, can only be defeated in one way.As tion with Hitler, and as we are trying to accomplish through appeasement today, negotiated a promise through a signature on a piece of paper is meaningless. The totalitarian desires of these Factions know no level of compromise. It is win at all costs and those who wish Thurs Attempt to pacify through third parties such as the UN or through diplomacy and the threat of sanctions are Merely playing into the hands of those who seek to destroy us.
Our enemies believe that the world does not have the stomach or the will to stop them, much as Hitler knew as they marched into country's and made his therm.
As the philosopher George Santayana wrote, and "Which rings as true today as at any point in history," Those who can not remember the past are Doomed to repeat it. "Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea are Merely symptoms of a much greater problem. Lol as any doctor will tell you, these symptoms need to be treated, or like a cancer they will Continue to Flourish and will eventually take over the body.

UN Climate Conference Opens in Copenhagen

Climate conference has been opened for two weeks of negotiations among 192 nations forge a pact Thurs Thurs secure the world from calamitous global warming.
Conference presidents Connie Hedegaard, U.N. climate chief Yvo de Boer, and the UN's chief climate scientist Rajendra Pachauri, were set to address the thousands of delegates in Copenhagen on Monday.
Negotiations have dragged on for two years, only recently showing signs of Breakthroughs with new commitments from the U.S., China and India to control greenhouse gas emissions.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
COPENHAGEN (AP) - Delegates converged Sunday for the grand finale of two years of tough, sometimes bitter negotiations on a climate change treaty, as the portable Officials calculated that pledges offered in the last few weeks Thurs reduce green house gases put the world within reach of keeping global warming under control.
Yvo de Boer, the UN's top climate official, said on the eve of the 192-nation conference that despite unprecedented unity and concessions, industrial countries and emerging nations need to dig deeper.
"Time is up," de Boer said. "Over the next two weeks, Governments have to deliver."
Finance - billions of dollars immediately and hundreds of billions of dollars annually within a decade - was emerging as the key to unblocking an agreement that would bind the global community to a sweeping plan to combat climate change.
Nations must also need to the Committee to larger emission reductions, de Boer said.
South Africa on Sunday became the latest country Thurs announce an emissions target. It said over the next 10 years it would reduce emissions by 34 percent from "business as usual," the level they would reach under ordinary circumstances. By 2025 that figure would peak at 42 percent, Effectively leveling off and thereafter begin to decline.
"This makes South Africa one of the stars of the negotiations," said the environmental group Greenpeace.
President Barack Obama's decision to attend the conclusion of the two-week conference, after phone consultations with other heads of state, was taken as a signal that an agreement was getting closer. They originally planned to make an hours long stop in the Danish capital this week.
More than 100 heads of state and government have said they will attend the last day or two, making Copenhagen the largest and most important summit ever held on climate.
"Never in the 17 years of climate negotiations have so many different nations made firm pledges so many together," de Boer said. "It's simply unprecedented."
Some were arriving to the summit trains is splashed with a green stripe symbolize efforts Thurs Thurs reduce the convention's carbon footprint. One train carried 450 U.N. officials, delegates, climate activists and journalists from Brussels and more trains were leaving from other European capitals.
Along with roughly 15.000 delegates and at least 100 world leaders, officials expect many protesters Thurs Descend is for the Copenhagen climate conference. Authorities were beefing up security in preparation.
A study released by the U.N. Environment Program Sunday indicated that pledges by industrial countries and major emerging nations fall just short of the reductions of greenhouse gas emissions that scientists have said are needed.
"For those who claim a deal in Copenhagen is impossible, they are simply wrong," said UN Environment Program Director Achim Steiner, releasing the report compiled by the British economist Lord Nicholas Stern and the Grantham Research Institute.
Environmentalists have warned that emissions commitments were dangerously short of what the UN Scientists have said were needed to keep average temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6F).
But most of those warnings were based on pledges only from industrial countries. The U.N. report included pledges from China and other rapidly developing countries, "Which in turn is contingent were rich-country funding to help.
All countries together should emit no more than 44 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2020 "To avoid the worst consequences of a warming world, the report said.
Computing the high end of all commitments publicly announced so far, the report said emissions will total some 46 billion tons annually in 2020. Emissions today are about 47 billion tons.
"We are within a few gigatons of having a deal," Steiner said. "The gap has narrowed Significantly."
Negotiations on a new climate treaty began in Earnest two years ago with the aim of crafting a successor to the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, Which bound industrial countries to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other earth-warming gases from 1990 levels, But which made no obligations are countries such as India and China. OMMISSION that caused much resentment and the United States rejected Kyoto.
Months of deadlock were broken in the last few weeks when China and India announced voluntary targets for lowering the greenhouse gas component of economic growth. Emissions would continue to climb, but at a lower rate. They said, however, they would not accept legally binding targets that could imply consequences if they fall short.
At the same time, Obama said he would commit to an emissions cut of 17 percent from 2005, even though those cuts have not yet been approved by Congress.
U.S. can show flexibility, even if it can not raise its offer emissions, said Jonathan Pershing, the senior U.S. delegate at the talks. They said the Obama administration was showing its seriousness through budget allocations and regulatory actions are big polluters.
Pershing defended the U.S. position as a radical change from the former administration under George W. Bush.
A year ago "we had a position that this issue was not essential and not critical," he said, calling the staggering shift. "Think about how long it takes for a major country Thurs fundamentally change its position, and this is a miraculously short period of rapid change," he said.
Delegates from several developing countries, however, were less optimistic, and were concerned that the major powers were cutting a deal behind the scenes that could Betray the interests of poorer nationshttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i9TuMrvrknh-ZXwqmZ2N-48kff3wD9CECUJO1

India-US Relations and Pakistan’s Concerns

Senators Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden played a key role in bringing the two countries closer to serve each other's agendas during Bush presidency. India needed Western technology, the U.S. needed the Indian market. India had regional aspirations, a nuclear and military strength of Which it was ing to expand and had Estranged relations with China, the U.S. under Bush needed a regional ally ready to contain China and serve as its proxy for policing the region. And with 9 / 11, came a new role that India could play for the U.S. in Afghanistan.

Both Pakistan and China carefully watch the changing dynamics of this relationship Deepening Which affects not only South Asia, but also China. They feel that if this partnership becomes too cozy for the comfort of others in the region, it will not serve peace that is already Uneasy.

Pakistan has felt uncomfortable that India is receiving U.S. assistance in the development of nuclear power industry even though India has refused Thurs sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Obama's assertion that 'Indian leadership is Expanding Security across the region "will find no supporters in Islamabad or Beijing.

The acrimonious relationship between Pakistan and India over several disputes blatant and India's role in dismembering Pakistan in 1971 has been exacerbated due to India's refusal Thurs engage in a meaningful dialogue with Pakistan.

As an old American ally, Pakistan's concern over the increasing U.S. 'tilt' towards India, was quite natural. Pakistan's own relationship with the U.S. has kept swinging from being the 'Most Allied Ally' to being the 'most neglected ally "and then Thurs being the' most Sanctioned ally," depending upon how much the U.S. needed Pakistan's services at a given time. Pakistan fears more belligerency from India in view of American support despite Pakistan's sensitivities.

The announcement by President Obama that his administration would begin to pull out its troops from Afghanistan after 18 months has given Rise to apprehensions in Pakistan that they may install India as a proxy power to protect U.S. interests.

Motivated by its sinister designs Thurs weaken Pakistan, India is actively promoting an East Pakistan style Insurgency in Balochistan. Once its military gains a foothold in Afghanistan it will squeeze Pakistan from the western border, while using rogue elements from the tribal belt, "Which it has already recruited, to destabilise Pakistan. Ample evidence of these activities was handed over to Indian prime minister by his Pakistani counterpart.

The US-Indian belief that India can hold the fort for the U.S. in Afghanistan is a fallacy. The Afghans being fiercely opposed to foreign occupiers, it would be Naïve Thurs expect that Indian forces would be welcome to stay after the Americans withdraw. Notwithstanding the support of the Northern Alliance and Karzai's weak government, The Taliban, who are bound to gain political influence in Kabul sooner or later, will reject Indian military presence is their soil, as it will represent American interests.

As of now in the U.S. current matrix, cordial Sino-US relations are very important, mainly owing to America, Reliance is a Chinese economic support that is not going to end any time soon. Obama can not promote relations with India at the cost of its relations with China.

Besides, the U.S. also can not ignore that China has an abiding interest in South Asia due to its regional security concerns and close relations with Pakistan.

Given the history of Sino-Indian Rivalry this is unpalatable for India, Which considers South Asia as its exclusive domain. Only recently the Indian officials, says a Washington Post report, in an outburst of self-Brahmanic Importance expressed concern that New Delhi has been relegated to the second tier of US-Asian relations "Because Obama did not mention India in his speech on U.S. relations in asia recently. The speech, delivered in Tokyo, focused on the Asia-Pacific region and not South Asia. This, the Indians believe, is Obama's Failure to recognise India's broader regional aspirations. The Indians were upset that "Washington was too Leaning CLOSELY to China."

Then to India's Chagrin, in the joint statement is a conclusion of Obama's visit to China, Obama suggested that Beijing Mediate between India and Pakistan. "China and the United States," the statement said, "are ready to strengthen communication, dialogue and cooperation are issues related to South Asia, and Work Together To promote peace, stability and development in that region."

"A third-country role can not be envisaged nor is it necessary 'to solve disputes between India and Pakistan, was the immediate Indian Foreign Ministry response.

Ashley Tellis of the Carnegie Endowment said, "The joint statement prompted new fears that somehow the United States and China would collude Thurs manage events in South Asia."

Tellis said this has caused neuralgia in India Because tensions between Beijing and New Delhi have Risen over border claims. India is also upset over Chinese plans Thurs divert Brahmaputra River that originates in Tibet and flows into North Eastern India. In addition, Indians are concerned that the Obama administration, unlike the Bush administration, views India as part of the South Asian problem, which includes the instability in Pakistan.

These Indian sensitivities will keep the U.S. is The Edge. Since both Seek to serve their respective geopolitical objectives, "Which are very divergent in nature, the relationship will be neither smooth nor lasting. In a sensitive region, where the U.S. must protect its own bilateral interests with China and Pakistan, tantrums on the part of the Indian leadership could make the New Partnership difficult to sustain.

Therefore, before Rushing into a collaborative arrangement with India and offering highly sensitive nuclear technologies, Washington will be well advised to first test out the Prickly world of relations with New Delhi.

The U.S. need not be impressed with the tall claims about India being the biggest democracy. India's human rights record is Dismal, particularly in dealing with minorities. It has a long way to go in Ensuring equal social status Thurs Dalits (untouchables), who form 20 per cent of the population. Ethnic and religious cleansing of minorities remains a common occurrence.

If the U.S. could make a political issue out of Tiananmen Square and Obama could refer to human rights issues during his China visit, why India should not be held to the same standard during Singh's visit.

As for the Indian request for a permanent seat in the Security Council, India's own involvement in the Kashmir dispute that is pending before the Security Council and whose Resolutions it has refused Thurs honor can not be ignored. This dispute has led India to Fight three wars with Pakistan and one with China. Its security forces subjugate the people of Kashmir, killing thousands and thousands of sexually ABUSING their women.

In response to a similar bid earlier, India was advised to first settle the Kashmir dispute. Then the US-India relationship had just begun Thurs take shape with limited U.S. influence over India. But now that the U.S. enjoys a greater CLOUT, it could more Effectively pressure India for a negotiated settlement, Which is in every one's interest, including regional peace,
