Radiation Leak Is Called No Risk

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (AP) — The Nuclear Regulatory Commissionsays the small amount of radiation detected at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant is not significant.
John White, a specialist, told ABC News on Sunday that there was no indication that radiation at the plant had exceeded or even approached regulatory limits.
The commission sent investigators to the power plant, in Dauphin County in south-central Pennsylvania, after a small amount of radiation was detected Saturday in the Unit 1 reactor.
About 150 employees were sent home that afternoon, but officials said there had been no public health risk.
Beth Archer, a spokeswoman for Exelon Nuclear, said the radiation had been quickly contained.
The unit has been shut for refueling and maintenance since Oct. 26. Workers are being tested for radiation exposure.Read More;http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/23/us/23leak.html

India’s Sugar Output May Beat Estimates, Survey Shows

. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Sugar production in India, the world’s second-largest grower, may be 11 percent more than estimated after farmers boosted planting and yields improved because of increased fertilizer use.
Output may jump to 17.68 million metric tons in the season started Oct. 1, according to interviews with 631 farmers across six states by Geneva-based SGS SA for Bloomberg. The farm ministry andthe Indian Sugar Mills Association have estimated 16 million tons. The SGS figure for the previous year was 16.1 million tons, which compares with 14.7 million tons estimated by the government and the mills.
A bigger harvest may help the country pare its reliance on imports and curb the 90 percent rally in global prices this year. A shortage turned India, the biggest consumer, into a net buyer for the first time since 2006 and sent prices to a 28-year high in September.
“If India’s production turns out to be better than expected because of higher recovery and yield, it could prove to be mildly bearish for prices,” saidLeonardo Bichara Rocha, an economist at the London-based International Sugar Organization.
India’s cane harvest this year may increase 9.8 percent to 297.95 million tons, bolstered by a 3.8 percent gain in acreage and a 5.7 percent rise in yield because of better irrigation and fertilizer application, the SGS survey showed. That’s more than the 249.5 million tons predicted by the government. The SGS survey by five teams between Oct. 20 and Nov. 3 covered six main cane-growing states including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, the biggest producers.

1st Pakistan-Made Fighter plane Rolling Out Today Updated at: 1105 PST, Monday, November 23, 2009

: The first state of the art JF-17 Thunder multi-role fighter plane produced in Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Kamra will roll out today (Monday).

This will kick start a new era in Pak-China relationship, and aviation industry, an official source told Geo news.

Both China and PAF attach a lot of importance to this project, which is materializing after hectic and laborious efforts spread over almost a decade, sources said.

The PAC has generated all the capability to produce the aircraft locally for its onward delivery to PAF besides materializing purchase orders from abroad.

The JF-17 Thunder a new generation, light-weight, all weather, day/night multi-role fighter aircraft with glass cockpit, hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controls and efficient man-machine interface will ensure a minimal pilot workload.

The maximum speed of Mach 1.6 and a high thrust-to-weight ratio will enable it to perform well in an air defence role.

An ability to carry short- as well as long-range air-to-air missiles lends the aircraft a first shot capability.

In the surface attack role, a variety of weapons - conventional as well as precision-guided, a sophisticated avionics suite along with accurate weapon delivery system, ensure higher mission success rate.

An effective ECM suite will greatly enhance survivability of the platform.

Its anticipated air-to-air refuelling capability will provide the JF-17 with more loiter time to safeguard the frontiers and the ability to deliver the required punch at distance.

It will replace the ageing fleets of A-5s, F-7Ps and the Mirages in the PAF inventory thus fulfilling a multi-role task.More Readhttp://www.thenews.com.pk/updates.asp?id=92025

KURBAAN's Below par Opening Shocks The industry!

download KURBAAN wallpapers was supposed to be a follow up to the year's biggest grosser, LOVE AAJ KAL, and a confirmation of Saif Ali Khan's position as a bankable solo hero. It was also expected to be the next production from Karan Johar that was to have continued the cent per cent (KAL HO NAA HO, KAAL, DOSTANA and WAKE UP SID) success record of Dharma Productions.

CHECK OUT: Saif Ali Khan-We haven't sold our souls for KURBAAN

However, all the predictions were proved wrong and even some of the good reviews failed to lure the audience into the cinema on Friday, the 20th November to see the Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi starrer KURBAAN. Yet again, the audience showed (like on many previous occasions), that they have a mind of their own and refuse to be swayed by what the critics have to say (either way!).

The Rensil D'Silva directed KURBAAN saw an ordinary opening day in Mumbai and many other places and just a few centers saw a good start. Though all is not lost and trade is hoping for a good pick up, but unfortunately indications (word of mouth) are otherwise. And all we can do is wait and watch!More Readhttp://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/09/nov/23-kurbaans-below-par-opening-shocks-the-industry-110904.asp

Braving Flu Threat, Muslim Faithful Descend On Mecca

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: Braving the swine flu pandemic, more than 2.5 million Muslim faithful are descending on the holy cities of Mecca and Medina this week for the hajj.

Under heightened monitoring by some 20,000 medical staff and more than 100,000 security personnel, the world's largest annual pilgrimage will kick off on Wednesday in western Saudi Arabia.

Four deaths from the A(H1N1) virus announced on Saturday - the first among pilgrims - served as a warning to the faithful who have mostly eschewed surgical masks and other preventive measures.

But the number was less than had been feared by the Saudi authorities.

Pilgrims from all over the world have poured into Saudi Arabia, by plane, bus and boat since October, for what for many is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Among the other concerns, Saudi officials are hoping also that repeated deadly stampedes - the last in 2006 left 364 dead - are a thing of the past.

Builders just completed a massive five-storey pedestrian walkway for the most crowded stage of the hajj - the stoning of the devil at the Jamarat in Mina valley - designed to avoid the panics of the past.

The 950 metre long, 80 metre wide bridge cost US$1.2 billion.

Swine flu has been a major concern since it reached pandemic level earlier this year.

By Saturday, only 20 pilgrims had been diagnosed with the disease. Twelve had been treated and discharged, four died and four remained in hospital.

Health ministry spokesman Dr. Khaled Marghlani said the four dead - three 75-year-olds and a teenage Nigerian girl - all had health problems ranging from chest infection to cancer that made them highly vulnerable.

"They all had pre-existing conditions," Marghlani told AFP. More Readhttp://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_world/view/1019937/1/.html

Suri Cruise's High Heels & Health Concerns!

Suri Cruise might have been a long list of fashion icons that wore high heels during their childhood itself. However Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' three-year-old daughter Suri raises health concerns as she spotted wearing high heels. Her parents come under fire from health experts due to this.

Some of the pictures of Suri wearing high heels surfaced recently. One pic shows the kid wearing a pair of open toe heels about an inch high, while clutching a cup from Starbucks. Experts are of the opinion that wearing heels at a small age can be damaging to the child's physical growth.

If a parent allows their child to wear the heels in moderation, that's one thing…
A common side effect of adults wearing heels too often is the tightening or shortening of the Achilles tendon. At Suri's age, children are growing quickly, and you want everything growing at the same rate. If the tendon is not growing at the same rate as everything else, it could become a problem.

If a parent allows their child to wear the heels in moderation, that's one thing, but who's to say what is moderate for a three year old child. With an adult, [high] heels that don't fit properly can lead to hammer toes or bunions, but an adult's growth plate is closed. With a child that young, her growth plate is still open, so a pair of heels that is too tight could damage the growing bones of her feet. A child's proper growth could face serious problems if a growth plate is crushed.More Readhttp://living.oneindia.in/insync/2009/suri-cruise-high-heels-231109.html

The Mandarin May Be In Iron Man's Future

If there is a single problem with the Iron Man franchise (in all its forms) it's that he doesn't have the greatest cadre of villains. Unlike, say, Batman, who has icons such as The Joker, The Riddler, Catwoman, and Two-Face, Iron Man's foes don't have great name recognition. One villain in particular, however, is known by anyone who has even lightly brushed up on the character: The Mandarin. As leader of The Ten Rings, The Mandarin is easily Iron Man's greatest foe. With Whiplash set to appear as the upcoming sequel's main villain, many fans have questioned when we're going to see the hero's arch-rival on the big screen. If Faran Tahir (who played Raza in the first movie) is to be believed, it won't be much longer.
The Mandarin May Be In Iron Man's Future
In an interview with Tahir by Moviefone UK, the subject of Iron Man (remember: his character's death is never confirmed on-screen) and the direction of the franchise came up, as well as his possible role. When asked about the third film, he responded by saying that Favreau is not stupid (I'm sure he appreciated that) and that he is well aware of fan's feelings and hopes, confirming that, "at some point, they want to introduce Mandarin into the storyline." Covering his own ass a bit, he then said that leaving it open-ended is good for business, but I'll leave you to make that judgment. As for his possible role in the film, it is still very much in the air, but he claims that he still appreciates the question being asked.

While Tahir's perspective on the future of the franchise might not seem like much, it does drive home a point. While the first film had its flaws, it is still one of the best comic book movies ever made and a large part of that has to do with John Favreau. Much like Nolan with Batman, he seems to actually care about the character and it's refreshing to hear about a director so in tune with his fan base. The truth is, if fans really want to see a film version of The Mandarin, Favreau is going to deliver. More Readhttp://www.cinemablend.com/new/The-Mandarin-May-Be-In-Iron-Man-s-Future-15800.html

American Music Awards: Notes From Backstage

Paula Abdul might not be returning as a judge on reality TV juggernaut "American Idol," but backstage at the American Music Awards on Sunday night -- where she was one of the few presenters and performers to visit the press -- she was still every bit the proud "relative" of the "Idol" alums. "It's very surreal and very exciting," she said of being around so many of the young performers she helped mentor over her years with the series. "Its amazing to see them. While presenting, I could see Carrie [Underwood] and [Adam] Lambert. And just now I watched Kelly [Clarkson]."
As for what's next for her career post-"Idol," Abdul remained tight-lipped. "You'll be hearing about it very soon," she said.
After winning the country male artist prize, Keith Urban had only one thing on his mind: some downtime with his family -- wife Nicole Kidman and the couple's young daughter, Sunday. Eminent Victorian Emily Blunt trades Prada For Prudery To Play a Young queen. Read more: Emily Blunt Trades Prada for Prudery in 'The Young Victoria' -- New York Magazine http://nymag.com/movies/features/62262/#ixzz0XewHeYtB

As an English actress, you have to don a bonnet at some point. This was my time,” says Emily Blunt. Queen Victoria is a long way from the scene-stealing bitchery and Louboutins of The Devil Wears Prada. Yet Blunt, 26, is equally at home in corsets, crinoline, and starchy repression. In The Young Victoria, she plays the queen from her teenage years—she assumed Britain’s throne at 18—through the first years of her marriage to Prince Albert, played dashingly by Rupert Friend, another rising British star. “There was a tsunami of women behind me wanting the role, so I sort of bullied myself in,” says Blunt. “Many period films are very arch and stiff, and I don’t respond to the characters. If I see ‘the rebellious English rose’ in stage directions, I’m already bored,” she adds. “But this was a girl who was willing to expose herself to the world. That was what was different for me.”

American Music Awards 2009: Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga Dazzle; Jennifer Lopez Performs New Song “Louboutins”

and Michael Jackson were the big winners at tonight’s American Music Awards ceremony, with the former picking up five awards, including Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Artist in the pop/rock and country categories, and Favorite Adult-Contemporary Artist (the teen accepted her awards live via satellite from London). Jackson was recognized in four categories, including Favorite Male Artist in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories.
But the AMAs, though technically an awards show, have traditionally been more about performances than statuettes, and last night’s offerings didn’t disappoint.
Performances by Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert were among the musical highlights. Lady Gaga, dressed in a flesh-colored bodysuit wrapped with white piping — embedded with flashing lights meant to imitate ribs? —  performed a (literally) smashing rendition of “Speechless.” Starting off by singing hit “Bad Romance,” she segued into “Speechless” by using her microphone stand to bust open a glass box with a piano inside. Straddling the bench, she then proceeded to smash glass bottles as she performed the song. Iran Wants Guarantees Over Nuclear Fuel Supply

TEHRAN — Iran's envoy to the UN atomic watchdog, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, insisted on Sunday that Tehran needs guarantees that it will receive nuclear fuel on time for its research reactor.

He also repeated that Tehran was ready to hold more negotiations over the supply of fuel for the internationally-supervised reactor located in the Iranian capital.

"The main issue is how to get a guarantee for the timely supply of fuel which Iran needs," Soltanieh was quoted as saying by ISNA news agency.

"We are ready to have negotiations with a positive approach, but because of lack of confidence with the West, we need to have those guarantees."

His comments come days after Iran rejected a deal brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which proposed Tehran sending most of its stock of low-enriched uranium (LEU) to Russia and France for converting into fuel for the research reactor.

Iran dismissed the deal but said it was ready for a simultaneous exchange of its LEU with the fuel inside the country.

Western powers are strongly backing the IAEA-drafted deal as they fear Iran could enrich its LEU further to higher levels and use it in making atomic weapons, a charge vociferously denied by the Islamic republic.

Iran Launches war Games To protect Nuclear Sites

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's armed forces launched large-scale air defense war games on Sunday to show off the country's deterrence capabilities in the face of pressure from the West over its nuclear program.

The display of military muscle comes at a time of rising tension between Iran and six major powers, which fear Tehran's nuclear program is aimed at producing nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this is the program's purpose.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's armed forces launched large-scale air defense war games on Sunday to show off the country's deterrence capabilities in the face of pressure from the West over its nuclear program.

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards and military forces jointly started five days of maneuvers in various parts of the Islamic state, Brigadier General Ahmad Mighani said, according to state television.

"It is the biggest war game, which takes place over an area 600,000 sq km (230,000 sq miles). The aim of this war game

is to promote military power of the armed forces against any attack," the television quoted Mighani as saying.

The United States and Israel, which Iran does not recognize, say they want a diplomatic solution to the nuclear standoff, but refuse to rule out military action if diplomacy fails.More;http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE5AK0FZ20091122

Beijing Concerns Over Latest China Mine Blast

China's leaders say they are making the country's coal mines safer places to work by closing small and illegal mines.

They claim that this campaign has reduced the number of coalmine deaths by nearly a half over the last four years.

But this latest accident near the city of Hegang in Heilongjiang province, where at least 87 people are known to have died, will remind them that the nation's collieries remain dangerous workplaces.

And the fact that Saturday's accident happened in a state-run mine - where safety standards are supposed to be better - will be a further worry.More;http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8372889.stm

Gaza Armed Groups Agree To Halt Rockets: Hamas

GAZA CITY — Hamas's armed wing on Sunday said that armed groups in its Gaza Strip stronghold had finalised a deal to stop firing rockets into Israel, but said they would respond to Israeli raids.

"The agreement between (Ezzedine) Al-Qassam (Brigades) and other factions to stop rocket (fire) is not a sign of weakness," the group said in a statement.

The agreement is "aimed at keeping together the internal front and the supreme national interest of the Palestinian people."

It warned, however, that the groups would respond in the case of Israeli strikes on the territory.

"Al-Qassam Brigades will not stand idly by in case of a Zionist escalation and will defend ourselves with all our force."

The statement was released a day after a rocket was fired into Israel from Gaza, landing without causing injuries or damage, and hours after the army responded with three air raids that wounded eight Palestinians.

It marked the latest violence along Gaza's border, which has been mostly quiet since a war that Israel launched on Hamas in Gaza on December 27 in response to rocket fire ended with mutual ceasefires on January 18.More;http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5htPt-RzAUDtVrBZD3azzAfqu2-HQ

The giant United States investment bank is better known for raking in the profits, but in the past few weeks, its chief executive Lloyd Blankfein has been trying hard to stem rising public anger.

Goldman, which received US$10 billion (RM34 billion) in bailout money, made a record US$3 billion profit in the third quarter of this year and set aside nearly US$40 billion in compensation and bonuses ? the biggest employee payout in the firm’s 140-year history. It also became one of the most vilified financial firms on Wall Street.

Last Friday came news that 300 Goldman employees have volunteered for garbage duty at a charity Thanksgiving dinner for thousands of hungry New Yorkers. The Salvation Army plans to serve 10,000 free dinners across the city this Thursday. The number of meals is 10 times the amount last year as more Americans struggle to put food on the table.

Goldman employees, meanwhile, are getting US$16.7 billion in compensation and another US$23 billion in bonuses.
