People Book Butchers Before purchasing Animals

are in high demand these days to the extent that many residents are trying to get them booked even before purchasing sacrificial animals for Eidul Azha.

It was really astonishing to overhear conversation between a man and a butcher at a shop along Saidpur Road. The two men were engaged in some ‘serious’ discussion over booking for slaughtering of sacrificial animals. The man was trying to convince the butcher to give him the exact time on the first day of Eid. It was also revealed that the man had not yet purchased sacrificial animals.

When asked by this scribe about the reason for early efforts, Tahir Abbasi said that it is wise to book a butcher at the earliest because a few days before Eid they will be all booked. “I have so far not purchased sacrificial animals because of their high prices. I will purchase them a day before Eidul Azha because at that time their prices will be comparatively low. However a butcher should be booked as early as possible to avoid an awkward situation on Eid,” he added.

According to people, butchers who are running their shops in Satellite Town are demanding Rs700 to Rs1,000 for slaughtering small sacrificial animals. For big animals, butchers will charge Rs1,400 to Rs1,800. People are booking them in advance and receiving slips from them as part of their ‘deal’ for slaughtering animals. More ;

Stocks Fall For 3rd Day As Dollar Strengthens

NEW YORK — The stock market lost ground for a third straight day as investors grew uneasy about a rising dollar and spiking demand for the safest government debt.
A disappointing earnings report from computer maker Dell Inc. weighed on technology shares Friday and hurt the  composite index.
Demand for safe havens rose following Dell's report and as European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said the ECB plans to start reining in some of its stimulus programs. Hiking borrowing rates could help keep inflation in check but could also slow improvement in the economy.
Investors seeking safety pushed into the dollar. A strengthening dollar curtails foreign demand for commodities, which are traded in dollars. It also can depress U.S. exports, which become more expensive as the dollar rises.
The advancing dollar hurt energy and materials stocks, which are closely tied to commodities.
Investors looked for stable government investments. The yield on the three-month T-bill, which moves opposite its price, fell to 0.01 percent from 0.02 percent late Thursday. It stands near its lowest level of the year, which it hit Thursday. Yields briefly turned negative Thursday as investors seeking to pad their portfolios with safe investments before the end of the year were willing to accept losses.Morehttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jmT59dgLTTziX4p9X9MRBRpWZGdQD9C3DT580

NYMEX-Crude down on strong dollar, weak equities Fri Nov 20, 2009 12:19pm EST

Dollar strengthens as risk appetite fades
* Wall Street dips, investors assess economic prospects
* Mild weather, profit-taking hit energy futures
NEW YORK, Nov 20 (Reuters) - U.S. crude oil futures pared
some losses at midday Friday, but the mood remained bearish on
a resurgent dollar and as equities were pressured by economic
recovery worries.
"Oil is clearly still tied to broader financial markets and
seeing losses due to a stronger dollar and a drop in stock
prices. To rally, we'd need to see more significant signals of
economic activity perking up," said Gene McGillian, analyst at
Tradition Energy in Stamford, Connecticut.
Underpinning the day's weakened energy futures prices were
persistent demand concerns amid high inventories.
Reflecting currently poor demand for refined products,
Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N), the largest independent U.S.
refiner, said that it will permanently shut down its 210,000
barrel-per-day Delaware City, Delaware, refinery because of the
weak economic conditions. [ID:nN20224848]Morehttp://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSN2023383120091120

Cigarette Butts Toxic To Fish, Say Researchers

Cigarette butts are toxic to fish and should be labeled as toxic hazardous waste, U.S. researchers say.
Scientists at San Diego State University say that a single cigarette butt containing a small amount of unburnt tobacco is enough to contaminate a litre of water and kill half of the fish swimming in it.
"Based on this new research, we believe that cigarettes should be considered toxic waste and new requirements need to be established for how they are disposed," Tom Novotny, a public health professor at San Diego State University, said in a statement.
The researchers tested the toxicity of the tobacco on fresh and saltwater fish: fathead minnows and top smelt — two species that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency typically uses in pollution studies.
The cigarette butts were left soaking in the water for a day before fish were placed in it for testing.
Whole cigarettes and cigarette butts with unburnt tobacco were found to be the most toxic, but even filters that had been smoked and that had no tobacco left on them were found to be toxic.
Cigarette filters are made of cellulose-acetate, which does not biodegrade.
The researchers presented their conclusion at a meeting of the American Public Health Association in Philadelphia earlier this month, and have submitted their study for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Cigarette butts are considered the most littered item in the world. Novotny recently estimated that 767 million kilograms of cigarette butts — or about 4.5 trillion butts — end up as litter every year.http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2009/11/20/tech-environment-cigarette-butt.html

Federer Says Football Needs To introduce Video Technology

By Martyn Herman
LONDON (Reuters) - World number one tennis player Roger Federer believes his friend Thierry Henry should not be villified for the handball which helped France edge past Ireland into the World Cup finals Wednesday.
Henry clawed the ball back with his hand and crossed for William Gallas to head France's equalizer, a goal that has sparked fierce debate about cheating in football and the need to introduce video technology such as that already used in tennis.
"You can't blame him for carrying on," the 28-year-old Swiss told reporters Friday as he prepared for the ATP Tour World Finals starting in London Sunday.
"If the referee doesn't see it, I just think it is the system which is at fault. So many goals are given that weren't goals, this is just one more. I am surprised that this type of error can occur in football."
Federer, who has appeared in television commercials with Barcelona striker Henry, has not always been a fan of the Hawkeye replays that have become a popular feature of tennis.
But he said it was about time that football followed suit.
"I think it needs it more than tennis," he said. "You can't stop play and analyze everything but you can do a few things so things like this don't happen and then Thierry Henry would not be in the position he is in."
World number three Noval Djokovic from Serbia, another keen football fan, said football had to act in the wake of the Henry incident. Continued...Morehttp://ca.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idCATRE5AJ3UW20091120

Gold RisesFfor Sixth Straight Session On Bets DollarTo Drop

By Pham-Duy Nguyen
Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Gold prices climbed for the sixth straight session on speculation that the dollar will decline, boosting demand for the metal as an alternative investment.
The dollar touched a 15-month low against a basket of major currencies on Nov. 16. The greenback climbed as much as 0.8 percent today. Gold reached a record $1,153.40 an ounce on Nov. 18 and has fallen only once this month.
“People are still buying gold because they think the dollar hasn’t been broken yet,” said Marty McNeill, a trader at R.F. Lafferty Inc. in New York. “If the dollar rallies, it’s an excuse to sell for profit. Any dip in prices is a buying opportunity.”
Gold futures for December delivery rose $2.30, or 0.2 percent, to $1,144.20 at 12:33 p.m. on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier, the price dropped as much as 0.8 percent. The metal gained 3.2 percent in the previous five sessions. In November, the price has climbed more than $100.
The popularity of exchange-traded funds backed by gold may diminish the historic inverse correlation between the dollar and the metal during times of financial turmoil, Deutsche Bank AG said in a report today.
Investors have poured $55.5 billion into gold ETFs in the nine months ended Sept. 30, Jason Toussaint, the World Gold Council’s managing director of ETFs, said this week. SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest bullion-backed ETF, has almost 1,118 metric tons, or more than China’s reserves.

UN Celebrates 20 Years Of Child Rights Convention

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called the 20-year-old Convention on the Rights of the Child as a beacon and guide to protect "the youngest and most vulnerable members of society".
The convention was signed into international law in 1989 by the UN General Assembly and it took effect one year later following ratifications by governments.
"Its influence has been profound," Ban told an audience at UN headquarters in New York. "It has become history's most widely accepted international human rights treaty."
"But realising the rights in the convention remains a huge challenge," he said, echoing the views of those organisations involved implementing the convention's provisions. Morehttp://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/americas/UN-celebrates-20-years-of-child-rights-convention/Article1-4785

The new EU chiefs: Rompuy-pumpy and Cathy Who? By JILL LAWLESS (AP) – 1 hour ago

LONDON — Catherine Ashton: International woman of mystery.
Ashton is Europe's first foreign policy chief, the international representative of half a billion people, with a euro7 billion ($10.5 billion) budget and a salary of more than $300,000 a year — but in her homeland, it's hard to find many who have heard of her.
The former anti-nuclear activist turned career Eurocrat is the European Union's new high representative for foreign  — and it's almost as much of a surprise to her as it is to her fellow Britons.
Ashton told the BBC Friday that she only found out she was a front-runner for the post in the last few days. She acknowledged her low profile, but promised that "over the next few months and years I aim to show that I am the best person for the job."
Critics slammed the EU for a lack of ambition in choosing her and Belgium's technocratic premier, Herman van Rompuy, who becomes the first EU president.
"The EU member states have talked themselves into choosing two very competent, able, and — frankly — rather boring choices for these two new roles," said Richard Whitman, a Europe expert at London's Chatham House think tank.
The 27-nation EU created the new posts of president and foreign minister as part of a reform treaty that takes effect Dec. 1.

US strike 'kills Eight Militants' (UKPA) – 2 hours ago

suspected US missile strike has killed at least eight militants in north-western Pakistan, officials said, the second attack this week in an area believed to hold many insurgents who fled from an army offensive elsewhere in the Afghan border region.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told visiting CIA director Leon Panetta that any new US strategy for Afghanistan must take into account Pakistan's concerns, especially fears that more troops could push militants across the border into Pakistan, according to a statement by Gilani.
The CIA is believed to be behind the more than 40 missile strikes to have hit suspected al-Qaida and Taliban targets over the last year close to the border region.
American officials do not generally acknowledge the attacks, which are unpopular among many in the region.
A US drone fired two missiles at a compound being used by suspected Taliban militants in a village near Mir Ali in North Waziristan, according to two intelligence officials.
The compound was destroyed and eight bodies were pulled from the rubble, the officials said, adding that two other suspected militants were wounded.
The targeted compound in the village of Shakhwadi was owned by two brothers, and Taliban militants were frequently seen visiting the building, which was cordoned off after the missile strike, the officials said.

Moss: Skinny Motto Out Of Context (UKPA) – 3 hours ago

Moss has claimed her use of a phrase in which she suggested it was better to be skinny than eat had been taken out of context.
Campaigners had condemned the star's words after she said in an interview that one of her life mottos was a slogan sometimes used by groups who glamorise eating disorders.
But representatives of the famously slender star said she did not support it as a lifestyle choice.
Kate's comment came from an interview with a fashion website Women's Wear Daily (WWD) in which she was asked if she had any mottos.
The supermodel, 35, said: "There are loads. There's 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels'. That's one of them."
But it has fuelled further controversy over the 'size zero' debate which has rumbled on in the fashion world. Many campaigners have accused the industry of encouraging young women to starve themselves and having an impact on those vulnerable to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
However a spokeswoman for Kate Moss's model agency Storm said: "This was part of a longer answer Kate gave during a wider ranging interview - which has unfortunately been taken out of context and completely misrepresented.
"For the record - Kate does not support this as a lifestyle choice."Morehttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5hW5pfAdmv011W2exBvUV9bcG7sUg

YORK — Heidi Klum and her post-baby body led the parade at the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show, which returned to New York with some fresh faces after four years on the road.
The lingerie retailer inducted five more women into its "Angel" ranks — a designation reserved for top models — in front of a packed house Thursday night at the Lexington Avenue Armory. They are Emanuela de Paula, Chanel Iman, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lindsay Ellingson and Candice Swanepoel.
But Klum, who gave birth to a daughter five weeks ago, was the audience favorite in her purple corset covered with a half gown with poufs of tulle. She emerged from the huge, castlelike set to applause.
Musical guest The Black Eyed Peas — especially Fergie, its only female member, who wore a black, jeweled bodysuit — was another crowd-pleaser. She came out later in a green corset gownhttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j2fHh_w2dzuIO0RcndTHOoRea8gAD9C3CE500

Gunman Opens Fire On Saipan; 5 Dead

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — A gunman went on a rampage on the Pacific resort island of Saipan Friday, first at a shooting range and then at a World War II historical site, killing four people and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself, officials said.
The violence claimed the lives of two men, a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, all residents of the U.S. commonwealth, Public Safety spokesman Jason Tarkong said. Five South Korean tourists and a 4-year-old local girl were wounded in what Tarkong termed a "random drive-by shooting."
Police said the attacker first took aim inside the shooting range in the community of Kannat Tabla, killing two men in their early 20s and the two children. A 4-year-old girl was critically injured with a gunshot wound to the chest.
About 11:30 a.m., shortly after the first attack, the suspect began firing a rifle from a white van at a group of South Koreans visiting a World War II historical spot in nearby Marpi. The South Koreans were wounded but police said they do not believe the shooter was specifically targeting tourists.Morehttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g4ij6BilxyqyjLpHTsmbgnYcKJDAD9C38NO00

Tila Tequila's Ustream video rant: Flashbacks made me do it

Tila Tequila went on a naked, unhinged rant on her Ustream page last night -- and best we can tell, a combination of "flashbacks" and wanting to prove she's not like Rihanna made her do it.

As to the second point: Yeah, we know. Rihanna got her record deal as a result of her voice, not her Myspace reach. As to the first point, per TMZ, Tila says the pressure resulting from her lawsuit against San Diego Chargers player Shawne Merriman got to her, and she "just kind of flipped out."

She also took a shot at Rihanna for not being more vocal about her altercation with Chris Brown earlier this year, and she wanted to make it clear to her own followers that that's not the way she rolls. The video (sort of) explains it.
