Why We Hate Keira Knightley

"If I'd thought about what fame meant when I was younger," Keira Knightley said earlier this week, "it probably would have been for your name to be respected for something you do well. I do not know if that is any longer what fame means. I do not see it in its modern-day connotations as being a particularly positive thing. "

To the millions of girls entranced by the exquisite contours of Knightley's face and the jobbing actors reading about her in Forbes magazine, where she is listed as the second-highest-paid actress in Hollywood last year (earning £ 19 million in 2007), that latter observation might seem a little less grace. Her comment is the nature of modern fame, however, is Astute - and one that hints at a desire to be respected for more than being the only woman in the world beautiful enough to look good in a swimming cap.

This, combined with a Thespian Genteel upbringing, might account for the slight Whiff of spoiled-little-girl that emanates from Knightley. But does it explain why mention of her name prompts women of every age Thurs Spring Forward, enthralled and enraged, to postulate on the size of her pout, Bosom and talent? No. That is female jealousy.

I have met Knightley twice: the first time, she was a pretty school girl from Richmond, the second, a silver screen goddess carrying her beauty with self-awareness, like a much-admired ornament. It is both occasions, she was polite and hard to dislike. And yet women do dislike her.

Female jealousy is a form of lust, the desire to know every inch of a beautiful woman in the same way that a man Wants to through sex. But this lust is more powerful than the male kind, and is what has propelled Knightley to her position as a fashion Figurehead, role model and Hollywood actress.

What's surprising is that she does not seem to generate a voraciousness in men. Ask them why and they will tell you that there is something too poised, too static about her face - and not enough vulgarity in that angular body.

Ask either sex Whether they set much store by Knightley's acting skills, however, and the response is unanimously Tepid. British contemporaries such as Romola Garai, Rosamund Pike, Rebecca Hall and Emily Blunt, far superior in their craft, will probably never command Knightley's fees. With commendable Modesty, the actress herself has admitted that she is "still improving."

Yet it's hard to imagine how far she can do so when you consider that, aside from Bend It Like Beckham, in which the then 16-year-old displayed a promise that has yet to be realized, she has always been given the role of The petulant beauty (Love Actually, Pride and Prejudice, Silk, Atonement).

Costume, clever casting, good production and the extraordinary alchemy of that face is a film are responsible for her success, "Which is why the choice of Martin Crimp's updated version of The Misanthrope as a West End stage debut is a smart one. With the support of the excellent Damian Lewis and Tara Fitzgerald, under the direction of Thea Sharrock's Equus, and in a role not unfamilar to her (beautiful but petulant American film star passing through London), she is as protected as it is possible to be before an 800-strong audience.

Knightley's what it does next that interests me. "In this business, fame lasts for a second," she has said. "You can be blown up and be blown down. People lose interest in faces Because new ones come along every second. I'm one at the moment. Tomorrow, I will not be. That's cool. I'm not saying that when it ends, I'll be like, "Yay!" It's ending. " But I'll move on and do something else. "

Looks like Hers survive for many years, but she may only grow as an actress when she stops being so conscious of them. "She makes this stupid face, just like my girlfriend does when she looks in the mirror," says a male friend.

Therein, perhaps, lies the problem: when Knightley stops seeing the camera as a mirror, we might start seeing her talent.

Robert Gates Says Afghanistan Withdrawal Will Be Gradual

Reporting from Washington - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates denied Sunday that President Obama had set an "exit strategy" for Afghanistan, and they forecast that only a 'Handful' of U.S. Troops may leave the country in July 2011, when a withdrawal is due to begin.

Gates, appearing television news programs have with other senior U.S. Officials said the Obama administration intended Thurs maintain its commitment to Afghanistan while gradually shifting security responsibilities to the country's central government.

"This is a transition," Gates said is ABC's "This Week." "We are not talking about an abrupt withdrawal. We are talking about something that will take place over a period of time."

Gates, Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton and National Security Advisor James L. Jones has appeared in The Sunday TV talk shows in a continuing effort to explain a policy that aims Thurs Satisfy those who want to end the war swiftly, as well as between those who want to stay for as long as it takes for U.S. goals to be met.

Obama announced last week that they would soon send additional U.S. 30.000 troops to Afghanistan, bringing the total nearly 100.000 Thurs, but that some would start to return home in 18 months.

His decision to set July 2011 as the point when U.S. Troops will begin to depart has Proved the most difficult element to explain Thurs domestic audiences and Allied governments. The Afghan, Pakistani and Indian Governments are concerned that the War-Weary United States might sharply scale back its commitment to the region, as it has in the past.

Gates said U.S. first troops would be withdrawn from areas where the Taliban Poses less of a threat, mostly in the north. He said U.S. Military Commanders had reason for optimism that a minimum 18-month Troop buildup would work, because they have seen progress in the south where U.S. forces have been added.

"I think one of the reasons our military leaders are pretty confident is that they've already begun to see changes where the Marines are present in southern Helmand," Gates said.

They have said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that the buildup "has the opportunity to make significant gains.... We will have 100.000 troops there, and they are not leaving in July 2011."

Gates also Sought to brace Americans for higher military casualties, "Which are expected as U.S. Troops flood the most hotly contested parts of the country in the south and the east.

"We'll have an increase in casualties at the front end of this process, but over time it'll actually Lead to fewer casualties," he said.

Jones and Clinton both described the drawdown as not a "cliff, but a ramp" that will gradually reduce Troop numbers.

Another element in the strategy will be to try to peel away less committed Taliban fighters. But Clinton said that, in her view, it was not Likely that the U.S. and Allied Governments will be Able Thurs persuade the Taliban's senior leadership to Give up its fight.

She said she was "highly skeptical" that any of the leaders would renounce their cause and agree to live peacefully in the countryside.

Clinton and Gates spoke with approval about Afghan President Hamid Karzai's recent statement that the Afghan army would be Able Thurs take control of some parts of the country in three years, and its entirety in five years. Private analysts consider the highly ambitious goal for the Army, Which has 90.000 troops Thurs patrol a country about the size of Texas.

Gates acknowledged that U.S. intelligence has not had reliable information on the whereabouts of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden for "years."

'Brothers & Sisters' Recap: Sweet Little Lies, Plus The World's Gayest Bachelor Party!

There was so much done right in this episode (ie Saul saying it would be weeks until the investigators knew what happened in WineGate 2009, so we knew we would not be seeing Ryan!) That we're going to forgive the writers for bringing Tommy back next week for "the emotional episode of the season." (What do you think that means? "I'm guessing Rebecca starts Thurs miscarry at the wedding, and it's a Cliffhanger.)
Let's dive in. We had the return of the popular Walker Sibling Phone Tree on Kitty ™ Walked In is Nora and Simon having relations in the shower and, naturally, had to call Sarah "Because Robert did not give her the horrified reaction she was looking for (" Good for her, "he said." It's a Whole New Day in Pasadena. ") Kevin, unfortunately, also chose to call Sarah at that moment to tell her that he and Scotty were having their sperm counts tested (" I'm not at work. I'm waiting for my husband Thurs finish masturbating ") and they had to hear about Nora's afterglow before going in to make his deposit. ( "There's not a DVD in the whole of West Hollywood that could counteract what I just heard.") I'm sorta happy that Scotty has a better swimmers: It's always fun to see Kevin competitive, and it set up for another Sarah Zinger ( "Oh, by the way, I'm glad Scotty's sperm's better than yours - us Walkers need to stop Reproducing").
Justin also phoned Sarah's worth the effort if Luc could come out to play and to show us yet again - we get it! - That he's lost touch with his family studying for his midterms. Do we believe that Justin actually thought he'd Aced his exams, or was his Impending failure, along with Rebecca morning denying him sex, the reason Sarah Had to ask if she was on suicide watch after hearing his voice? (This was such a good episode for Sarah and she did not even have sex!) Regardless, it's worth noting that Justin never actually got to tell Rebecca that two Ds, two Fs, a C-and put him back on academic probation. When she heard he'd had two gulps of champagne at the "gayest bachelor party ever" (thrown by Robert!), She interrupted his string of Confessions to tell him they could not fall apart now, he's going to be a dad. I can see why Justin would be angry but that everyone already knew Holly about the baby. (Rebecca had to tell Kitty she was seven weeks pregnant when her bust would not fit in her wedding dress, Kitty then told Robert on purpose and Nora Accidentally, and Robert told the gay Triumvirate.) But I do not understand why everyone, including Rebecca, expected Justin to immediately have an answer. Rebecca had taken weeks to come to the decision that she wanted to keep the baby. Justin deserved more than just a game of toss with Robert in the backyard. Let's not even go into how appropriate it was for Justin to ask Robert when it's okay Thurs lie: Robert telling Kitty that when they looked at her bald all they saw was how beautiful she was and not that she could die (good), not Robert telling Kitty that he intended to run for governor (bad). Justin wanted to know if it was an appropriate lie to say you're happy to have a baby when you're not. Robert told him he'd have to figure that out for himself. Apparently, it is. They told Rebecca that they wanted the baby, too - and sold it. I believed him until we got the shot of his worried face as he hugged her.
While we wait to see what happens there (the preview Showed Justin telling David that he's not on board with the baby), we're also left wondering what Simon is up to ... I'm not sure what kind of game they could be playing - does dating the founder of a home for cancer patients and their families help the reputation of a possibly disgraced doctor? - But we're being led To Believe It's something. Sarah Googled him and found out that they had two major Malpractice suits against him for negligence. When She Went to burst the bubble's Nora, Nora already knew about them and said they'd been thrown out. After Simon Nora asked to leave following family Blowout # 1.456, Sarah and Kitty convinced her to get back with him ( "You were doin 'somethin' that was feelin 'good, so go with it," Sarah said, with the delivery that earns Rachel Griffiths Emmy nominations). But then Kevin told Sarah the cases were thrown out right around the time he stopped seeing patients and began focusing on research - his license could have been yanked? Again, not sure what this has to do with him dating Nora, unless he's trying to treat patients at her home, Which they is not. Maybe they're afraid He'll distract Nora from her house more than work - "We always have milk! The Northridge Earthquake, El Niño, the LA Riots. We always have milk! "- And her foundation will suffer? (No, still do not buy it.)
Do you have a theory about Simon? What do you think will happen between Rebecca and Justin? How are the writers going to ruin the Nora has a new respect for risk-taking and resilient Hollywood? I love it when the two of them are civil, but that can not last, right?

Cam Inman: Immaculate It Wasn't, But Raiders Win Memorable One

This was not an Answer to the Immaculate Reception. Well, these Raiders Dismal still tout a 4-8 record after Sunday's 27-24 upset of their long time rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
Those Steelers, the 1972 team that was the first to make the playoffs for the six-time Super Bowl winner, will always have Franco Harris.
But on this chilly December day along the Riverfront Pittsburgh, karma may finally have come around. The result was a storybook ending that, indeed, belonged to the visitors. What an ending it was. Specifically, the winning drive, Which provided a step-by-step recipe for Sunday's Stunner.
A magical touchdown connection between the Steelers 'Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward, one that would normally set off the usual alarms losing, instead was muted by the Raiders' ensuing drive.
Ten plays. Eighty-eight yards. With less than two minutes to play. An 15-point underdogs, marching their way to a crowd-Silencing victory and sending the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers (6-6) to a fourth straight loss.
The final drive made a hero of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, Whose Pennsylvania Homecoming featured his first career 300-yard passing game and a tear-jerking post-game session with his family.
It vindicated rookie wide receiver Louis Murphy, who no dropped passes and instead caught four for 128 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with Read Morehttp://www.mercurynews.com/columns/ci_13942193

Giants' Jacobs Enjoys His Part in Win Over Dallas Cowboys

There are lovers and Cowboy Cowboy loathers, and by now, Brandon Jacobs has a rather famously planted himself among the latter.

Sunday, the New York Giants running back added some fuel to the conversation with his 74-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter to Give the Giants the lead and momentum.Jacobs, usually a target of last resort for Giants quarterback Eli Manning, took great delight in giving the Cowboys a figurative thumb in the eye.

"Oh ... no question," Jacobs said. "This is so good. This is the first time in my five years we've beaten the Cowboys twice in one season. It makes me feel on top of the world."

Jacobs, it should be noted, has been a 1,000-yard rusher twice in his NFL career, but has rarely done much damage to the Cowboys - save for a 117-yard outing last season.

They did not do much on the ground against them Sunday, either, putting in a rather pedestrian 10-carry, 39-yard performance that included a 1-yard TD plunge.

So it came as something of a shock when they caught a 10-yard throw from Manning, who first had been looking first for tight end Kevin Boss, then rumbled down the side line for the go-ahead touchdown.

"They were in man coverage to that side," Manning said. "Boss got banged as he was trying to release. I Was Able Thurs throw [Jacobs] an accurate pass and keep him in Stride. They Showed some speed."

More speed, in fact, than Giants coach Tom Coughlin had ever seen from Jacobs.

"I've never seen him run that fast," Coughlin said. "I reminded him of that."

Cowboy safety Gerald Sensabaugh made a diving shot at Jacobs at the Dallas 22, but Jacobs hurdled him and has kept running until he was plowed into the Pylon by Linebacker Anthony Spencer.

Jacobs said he could have kept running if he'd had to.

"I was good, actually," he said. "I Was Able to go to the side line, celebrate and talk trash. I was not out of breath."

Nor was he out of ammo, using the occasion to fire off one final salvo at the team he says they first detested while growing up in Houma, LA.

"It's extra special," he said. "Dallas is a team I just absolutely can not stand. I've been hating Dallas since I knew anything about football. My hatred in my heart is still there."

Janka Wins GS For 3rd World Cup Victory in a Row

When Carlo Janka zoomed into the finish area Sunday, skis spraying a cloud of snow Thurs signal his third consecutive World Cup victory, "The Last Man To compile for so long a winning streak quickly came over and Showed his respect.
As Janka began to celebrate, reigning overall champion Aksel Lund Svindal raised a hand and BOWED, then BOWED again. The message was clear: "We're not worthy."
Right now, no one is. Janka simply can not be beaten. The 23-year-old Swiss Skier wrapped up a 3-for-3 weekend by winning a giant slalom Sunday, becoming the first Man To take three World Cup races in a row since Svindal did it more than 2 1 / 2 years ago.
"Janka's skiing has been pretty incredible." It's crazy to see how well they did here, "said Ted Ligety of Park City, Utah, who was fourth in the GS. "He's definitely a strong kid. He does not do anything crazy special with his skiing. He just does not make mistakes."
Indeed, Janka's upper body was steady as can be through the turns, and his skis were always in contact with the slope. They finished two runs down the Birds of Prey course in a combined time of 2 minutes, 29.44 seconds.
"It looked, like, really easy, how they did it," Swiss coach Sepp Brunner said.
Janka added Sunday's triumph to those in the super combined Friday and downhill on Saturday.
"Just fantastic," Janka said.
When the 23-year-old arrived at Beaver Creek this week, they owned a total of two career World Cup race wins. Asked to explain his results in Colorado, he said: "I'm just skiing. I'm in good shape. I had a great run. I do not know why."
Austria's Benjamin Raich was next Sunday, 0.47 seconds behind, and Norway's Svindal came in third, 0.93 back. Ligety was more than a second slower than Janka, while his U.S. teammate Bode Miller skied out on the first run.
Janka led after Sunday's first GS run, which was contested in heavy snow fall that made it tough to see. The second run came under clouds, but no snow, and Janka was superb again.
"A young guy, skiing that fast - that's pretty rare," Svindal said. "It seems like Janka's at a cruising altitude pretty good right now. I think he's going to be very good all through the season."
Svindal finished first in a downhill, a super-G and a giant slalom March 14-17, 2007, at Lenzerheide, Switzerland, en route to that season's overall title. The Last Man To take three races in a row at Beaver Creek was Hermann Maier of Austria in 1999.
Pretty Heady company.
Lindsey Vonn of Vail, Colo., Nearly matched Janka's feat this weekend in the Women's World Cup races at Lake Louise, Alberta. She won down hills Friday and Saturday, then was the runner-up - by all of 0.03 seconds - in a super-G on Sunday.
Like Vonn, Janka is off to quite a start this season, marking him as someone to watch at the Vancouver Olympics in February. They finished third in a giant slalom at Soelden, Austria, in October, then third again in a downhill at Lake Louise last week.
Then came his perfect performance at Beaver Creek.
All this from a racer who said he's still Regaining his strength after missing most of the summer with a virus. Most days, Janka said, they felt like they had a "low battery."
They mourn was charged up just fine this weekend.
Miller looked good on one of the three race days at the lone U.S. stop on the men's World Cup circuit: He finished fourth behind Janka on Sunday, displaying his typically risky style. The American made two mistakes in that event - putting his glove down in the snow at one point to stay upright - but overcame the glitches to deliver a strong run.
The "Did Not Finish" on Sunday was the third for Miller in the six events he's contested this season. Miller got off to a late start "Because they did not decide until September that they would return to the circuit.
He also failed to finish the second run of Friday's super combined at Beaver Creek.
In assessing Janka, Svindal the kid paid a high compliment by comparing him to Maier and Miller in versatility. And when was asked Svindal Whether it's good for the sport that Janka and they are both in fine form at the moment, more praise came.
"Right now we're not head-to-head, I would say," Svindal said. "He's a couple of heads ahead of me, at least."

Looking for Bin Laden’s Address

Ever since Obama, aos name has been connected to that of Osama, through the word play practiced by the American right in its incitement campaign during the presidential elections, the fate of these two men has also become connected. Barack Obama, aos presidency could have been different if it had not come in the wake of the greatest U.S. campaign against Osama Bin Laden, a campaign that has so far failed to achieve its main objective, the one announced by its leader, George Bush, "prime" when he launched his famous slogan:, Äúwanted, dead or alive, AU. Thus the measure of Obama, aos success, having criticized shifting the war against Al-Qaeda from Afghanistan Thurs Iraq, and from pursuing Osama Bin Laden, Thurs pursuing Saddam Hussein, became Proving that he is more capable than his predecessor of Achieving such a goal.

Bin Laden, aos leadership of Al-Qaeda, if they still Effectively exercises such a leadership, could also have been different had Obama not been the current U.S. President. It is doubtful that the pursuit of the leader of Al-Qaeda would have been as intense as we are witnessing now, had a Republican President John McCain resided in the White House. Proof of this is the fact that all of the attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda in Europe on September 11, particularly the terrorist bombings in London and Madrid, in addition to the plot Thurs detonate airplanes across the Atlantic, the main architects of which had been Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri, did not move the zeal of the Western security and intelligence apparatus in the pursuit of the two men as is taking place today, because of the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and the bombings which, on a nearly daily basis, reap lives in Pakistan, aos Mosques and military barracks.Read Morehttp://www.daralhayat.com/portalarticlendah/83702
