Lleyton Hewitt Through to Last 16 After Marcos Baghdatis Retires


Lleyton Hewitt last night set his sights is a nemesis and world No.1 Roger Federer after sweeping into the Australian Open's fourth round when Marcos Baghdatis retired with a shoulder injury.

Baghdatis, the 2006 Melbourne Park finalist, succumbed Thurs severe soreness after only 54 minutes when trailing 0-6, 2-4, giving Hewitt maximum recovery time as he tries to find the key to upsetting Federer tomorrow.

Hewitt, Federer has not toppled since the 2003 Davis Cup semi-final when the Adelaide baseliner recovered from two sets to love and a break down to win in five.

Since then, Federer has beaten Hewitt 14 times in a row and has not lost to his former doubles partner at Grand Slam level.
Hewitt will carry memories of his best form into his eighth Grand Slam Confrontation with Federer.

"I hit the ball as well as I have in a long time tonight. I took it up another notch." Everything has gone according to plan, "he said.

"I served well, hit the ball great, moved fantastic. I feel like I've STEPPED it up in every match so far."

Hewitt will have to find further improvement Thurs Upstage Federer, who beat him in a tight four-setter at the U.S. Open in September.

"It does take a great performance to beat him and that's why he's possibly the greatest player ever to play," Hewitt said. "He does not lose many matches. You look at his record in the grand slams.

"I still think there's room for improvement in my game and that's why you keep working. You play for these moments. These are the situations that motivate you." Full Story
