Tatum and Seyfried Bring Big 'R' Romance To 'Dear John'

Seyfried is a dead ringer for a young Virginia Madsen. Tatum bears that tough, early John Wayne reserve that masks a wounded heart.

Yes, director Lasse Hallström ( "The Cider House Rules," ABBA's music videos) hit the jackpot with this duo, both of whom do their damnedest in this tearjerker.

True to Sparks' novel, Hallström keeps the focus squarely on John Tyree, a 23-year-old army officer, and his true love Savannah Curtis.

On leave from overseas duty, John stumbles upon this molla-haired beauty is a North Carolina beach in 2000. Instantly smitten, the pair's bond grows fast and deep.

"I always looked at John a little like a baby," Channing told CTV.ca during a recent visit to Toronto.

"He was never taught any social skills by his father. That's why he joins the military. He joins to find a family and learn how to start being a man."

Hallström opens just when lonely, troubled John is ready to take the next step in his life.

"John meets a girl who teaches him how to love, have a relationship and be understanding," says Tatum.

Compassionate Savannah compels John to reconnect with his distant, coin-collecting father, a role played to perfection by Oscar-nominated actor Richard Jenkins ( "The Visitor").
